Retreat with Dolpo Tulku Rinpoche

It is very important to know why the Kusali Chöd practice is done.

The word Chöd means to cut. What we have to cut through is our grasping for an independent self. Self-centeredness and our clinging to a self are the foundation of all our negative emotions, we can observe this in our everyday experiences. How does the Chöd practice cut through this self-grasping? Through the practice of love and wisdom; through the sword of love and compassion.

Guru Rinpoche said:
The accumulation of the Kusali delights the Three Jewels and through that one obtains unceasing spiritual attainments. By giving up attachment to one’s own body, outer and inner obstacles are pacified. This is crucial as it brings immeasurable benefits.

One’s own body and life are the most important things to all human beings. Chöd practice is about letting go mentally of one’s own life, that which one values most, and offering it to others. The merit accumulated by this will be much more powerful than with other offerings. For this reason, Chöd practice is considered very helpful in healing many diseases and protects from the damage caused by demons, as the embodiment of our fears. By transforming our body into nectar and thus satisfying the needs of all beings (including those who cause harm) we can release our attachments and fears. Thus we can clear emotional and mental delusions, break through karmic habitual patterns and gain insight into the pure nature of phenomena and our mind.
