In this lecture Ellen Johannesen will talk about the history and revelation of the Namchö treasure, based on her MA thesis, a translation of the Inner Namthar (biography) of Terton Mingyur Dorje (1645-1667). The text, written by the great scholar and Tantric master, Karma Chakme (1613-1678) is the second of a three-part biographical account of Mingyur Dorje´s life, focusing on the terton´s spiritual maturation leading up to the revelation of the Namchö Treasure (gter ma). This treasure cycle contains the essential practices of the Palyül Lineage, such as the Tsalung and Tummo practices that are taught by Dolpo Tulku Rinpoche.

About the text: The Inner Namthar of Terton Mingyur Dorje presents the narrative of the Namchö revelations embedded in a polemic work. Karma Chakme defends the Tibetan Treasure tradition. He posits an explicit philosophical argument that directly links the Tibetan Treasure Tradition with the Indian Mahāyāna tradition. He claims that:

  1. Revelation is the natural activity of realized beings and occurs according to the individual revealer’s level of realization.
  2. Treasures are revealed today in the same way that most Buddhist canonical texts were revealed in the past.
  3. The proof of these texts’ authenticity is—then as in now—based on the criterion of containing functional and effective practices. He demonstrates how the texts´ two proponents, Karma Chakme and Terton Mingyur Dorje, deliberately evoked visionary encounters, requested Treasures from departed masters, and practiced the newly revealed teachings successfully.
