Current Needs

As president of the Palyul Ling Monastery School, Dolpo Tulku Rinpoche is committed to ensuring the education of the students at the newly built Palyul Ling Monastery School. Many girls und boys from disadvantaged regions of the Himalayas live and study there, where they receive a solid secular education combined with a Buddhist education. The current 480 students are cared for and supported by 29 teachers and other staff (kitchen, housekeeping, etc.). To fund this comprehensive care and education, we need your support!

The total monthly cost to cover salaries is €4,030.

You can sponsor a staff member’s or teacher’s salary with a monthly donation of between €70 (assistant teachers, cooks, housekeeping staff), €120 (subject teachers), and €200 (teachers of advanced subjects). Or support the children and youth at Palyul Ling with a one-time donation. Every contribution counts!

Background

From 2018 onwards, the monastery Ngagyur Palyul Ling has been managed and operated by a group of dedicated Tulkus and Khenpos closely affiliated with Palyul Ling.

Since 2024, about 29 teachers are employed at the monastery to teach all grades of the Secondary School and the Shedra, which is the monastic college. In total 480 students are living and studying at the monastery.

The students start their studies with different local and foreign languages and go up to both traditional and modern fields of knowledge.

There are two levels of education; the Secondary School as a general education and the Shedra for the advanced studies.

The Special Secondary School

The Secondary School offers general subjects of study as well as specific ones required by the Nepalese government totalling 12 years of education.

During these 12 years, the students study languages, science, math, etc. On top of these general academic education,  students also receive a basic Buddhist education at the monastery.

Currently 420 students attend the secondary school.

The Shedra (College-Level Study of Buddhist Philosophy)

The Shedra is a ten-year monastic study program that encompasses Buddhist philosophy, linguistics, and history. The first seven years are devoted to the sutra-based study of Buddhist philosophy, which includes the Vinaya (ethics and discipline), Abhidharma (Buddhist phenomenology and metaphysics), Madhyamaka, Prajnaparamita, and Pramana (Buddhist logic and epistemology). The final three years are spent studying Vajrayana topics such as Maha-, Anu-, and Ati-Yoga. In addition to the sutric and tantric subjects, the 60 students also study grammar, poetry, and general and Dharma history.

Through this integration of Buddhist and scientific disciplines, we can recognize that there is no contradiction between the Buddha’s teachings and modern science.

The auspicious location of Manichu/Sankhu

The headquarters of the Ngagyur Palyul Ling Monastery School is Manichu, Sankhu. It is located 17 km northeast of downtown Kathmandu.

The town of Sankhu is one of the oldest settlements in Nepal’s history. It is also home to one of the five most important sacred sites associated with Vajrayogini. Three kilometers uphill from the Vajrayogini Temple lies another sacred Buddhist site where, in a previous life as a bodhisattva, the Buddha bestowed the jewel from his usnisha (crown jewel). The monastic school is situated between these two sacred sites. This is also the reason why the monastery in Sankhu was named Manichu.
